Back-to-school season can be a surprisingly big adjustment for dogs and cats. After a summer filled with activity and attention, a suddenly quiet house can mean less interaction, more alone time, and a completely different routine. Here’s how to make the transition easier.

Back to School Stress: Is Your Dog or Cat Struggling With the New Routine?

Summer is over.

The alarm goes off earlier. Lunches are packed. Backpacks are by the door. The kids disappear for most of the day.

And your pet?

They're wondering where half the family went.

After months of extra attention, playtime, adventures, and kids conveniently dropping food on the floor, back-to-school season can completely change a pet's daily routine.

Your Routine Changed. Your Pet Noticed.

Dogs and cats are great at recognizing patterns.

They know when breakfast happens, what grabbing the leash means, and somehow hear a treat bag opening from three rooms away.

So when their normal routine suddenly changes, they notice that too.

In fact, research involving more than 1,800 dogs found that changes in the amount of time dogs were left alone were associated with the development of new separation-related behaviours.

You might notice your pet becoming more restless, vocal, clingy, destructive, or having difficulty settling.

That doesn't automatically mean they have an anxiety disorder. Sometimes they're simply adjusting to a new normal.

Make the Transition Easier

The goal isn't to keep your pet entertained every second you're away. It's to make their new routine predictable and interesting.

Keep feeding, walks, playtime, and bedtime as consistent as possible. If you know their alone time is about to increase, introduce it gradually rather than going from a house full of people to eight quiet hours overnight.

And don't forget enrichment.

A sniff-filled morning walk, puzzle feeder, treat hunt, window perch, interactive toy, or short training session can give your pet something to do besides waiting for everyone to come home.

Their brain needs exercise too.

And Yes, Cats Notice

Cats may act like your schedule is none of their business.

It is.

A quieter house can change their playtime, feeding routine, stimulation, and access to their favourite humans.

Instead of barking or pacing, a cat may show changes in grooming, hiding, vocalization, play, appetite, or attention-seeking.

Different reaction. Same message:

“Something around here changed.”

A Little Extra Calm Support

Routine, exercise, and enrichment should come first. But some pets may benefit from additional nutritional support during periods of change.

That's where Myco Pet Focus & Calm fits in.

Myco Pet Focus & Calm mushroom powder for dogs and cats supporting calm behaviour, focus and emotional balance

Formulated for dogs and cats with functional mushrooms, probiotics, and magnesium, Focus & Calm supports calm focus, emotional balance, and the gut-brain connection—without simply making your pet sleepy.

Think:

Routine + Enrichment + Exercise + Calm Support

Because the goal isn't to make your pet sleep through the new routine.

It's to help them adapt to it.

The Bottom Line

Back to school might be exciting for the family.

Your pet may be thinking:

“Wait… where did everybody go?”

Give them consistency, keep their brains and bodies active, and allow time to adjust.

They may never understand what back to school means.

But they definitely notice when their favourite people aren't home.
