Allergies – A Review of the Standard Treatment Regiment

Allergies! Allergies!! Allergies!!! What to do?!

Oftentimes we take our dogs to the vet when they’re experiencing uncomfortable allergic reactions. You might have noticed your pup excessively itching, licking, biting, or gnawing at themselves; maybe your pup has redness on their belly, thighs or armpits, or maybe they’ve broken out in hives from nose to tail!

All of these symptoms can be a result of allergies.

So, what does the vet do?

First, let’s order a slew of expensive tests:

1. Skin Scrapings to check for mites and parasites.
2. Cytology test to check for bacteria, yeast and inflammatory cells.
3. Fungal cultures to test for fungal infections such as ring worm.
4. Bacterial cultures to check for bacterial infections.
5. Blood tests to check for infection, organ distress like kidney or liver failure, hormonal imbalances or autoimmune diseases.
6. Flea Comb test to check for fleas.
7. And of course, Allergy tests to identify for food, environmental and contact allergen triggers.

Unfortunately, almost always, these tests all come back negative. Nothing seems to be wrong, and no allergen trigger can be identified. And I’m sorry to break it to you, but it likely never will. All that time, money and discomfort just to get 0 answers, more frustration, and an unhealthy pet.

Next, your vet might tell you to go to an animal dermatologist. More $$$$$, more wasted time and more “shoulder shrugs…I’m sorry, I don’t know what the cause is.”

In the end, your vet/dermatologist will likely prescribe one of many of the following:

1. A Hypoallergenic or Elimination Diet where you common food allergens are removed (such as chicken…but it’s not an allergy to chicken, it’s an intolerance to all the antibiotics that are fed to chickens and additives used in the processing of chickens. Try chicken from a local farmer and see the difference it makes.)
2. Medication
   1. Over-The-Counter Antihistamines such as Benadryl, Zyrtec or Claritin to help reduce inflammation and itching. These put stress of the liver and kidneys.
   2. Corticosteroids such as Prednisone or Dexamethasone to reduce inflammation and the immune response. These drugs are incredibly dangerous long-term as they cause severe liver and kidney damage and can cause insulin insensitivity leading to diabetes!
   3. Apoquel (Oclacitinib) works to reduce itching and inflammation by inhibiting JAK cytokines. It doesn’t actually support the immune system or stop the allergic reaction. But what it does do is cause cancer, increases the risk of developing serious infections, and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, anorexia, and blood-work changes.
   4. Atopica (Cyclosporine) works to suppress the immune system to reduce allergic reactions but this also means that your dog will be more at risk for infections and cancer. Atopica may also cause vomiting, diarrhea, GI problems, gingival hyperplasia (oral health issues) and diabetes. If administering vaccines to your dog, only KILLED vaccines should be used because the immune system is suppressed already and won’t be able to react well enough to prevent infection.
   5. Injections such as Cytopoint (monoclonal antibody therapy) which merely blocks the itch response – the allergic reaction is still there; it’s just your dog won’t feel itchy. ($100-200 per shot, every 4-8 weeks, plus your vet visit charge of ~$120). Cytopoint is meant only for ENVIRONMENTAL/SEASONAL allergies.
3. Bathing regimens like using hypoallergenic soaps and soothing shampoos which is good for symptom relief but still doesn’t target the root cause.
4. Environmental Management like no playing outside…not really a realistic prescription.

After doing all these things, nothing changed and our pets were even more unhealthy with all the side effects of medications. To us, these recommendations were sub-par and an unacceptable way for us and our pets to live their lives. There had to be a better way…
